2 detailed ideas for a still life, including:

  • a potential working title
  • your textured, reflective and transparent objects and 2 others
  • your backdrop/background, and
  • how you plan to set up your direct light
  • a quick sketch of your object arrangements and (emotional) light setup

OBJECTS: reflective trophy, textured blue ribbon, transparent champagne glass, framed awards certificate, gold medal on ribbon lanyard

BACKDROP: plain white sheet

LIGHTING: (Explain what available, controlled light sources you will use, where you will place them and why -- minimize glare, increase texture, etc.)

SKETCH: (Attach a quick sketch of your object arrangements and light setup -- how will your objects be arranged and where will your lights be?)

1) Lighting a Still Life Critique

Please look over the D and B block digital photography classes’ Groups to examine their Lighting a Still Life photos.
Links to those Groups are found at the top of mskalnay.com

Choose your THREE favorite photos from this assignment (either/both classes -- 3 total) and complete a written (typed or neatly handwritten) 4-point analysis on those photos (about 1 paragraph – approximately 100 words). Please include the Flickr name of each photographer so we can match up your critique with the photo.

HAND IN WHEN FINISHED

2) Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac Flickr question

Objective:
The book opens with Naomi in an ambulance with amnesia. As Naomi is discovering who she is, so are you: as she is now, who she has been in the past, and who she wants to be. Focus on some of the things she discovers about her life over the past few years: some of them feel right, such as her friendship with Will; some startle her, such as her mother’s remarriage; some mystify her, such as her relationship with Ace.

Choose ONE of the following Reading Group questions from Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac and post A) the question and B) your response in Flickr (approx. 300 words)

1. Amnesia gives not only Naomi a second chance but also others in her life. Pick a character and examine how Naomi’s amnesia affects his/her life.

2. Why is the fact that Naomi is an orphan important? How does the author weave this theme throughout the story?

3. Photography is a recurring motif. How does it enrich the story?

4. Examine the scene in which Naomi’s memory returns. Why is it significant that it is the French word for camera that seems to open the floodgates? Why are the two memories Naomi recounts --- and the individuals they involve --- pivotal?

5. What would you do with a second chance?

Whatever you do not finish in class should be done for homework

1) Filters can be used together on the same layer -- e.g. blur and neon edges

2) You can duplicate your background layer and adjust the opacity to see both layers at once, then add different filters to both layers to get interesting effects

3) Try adjusting tonality and color first and then layering filters onto your image

This idea can be used with a photo that has two layers in it -- either two different photos (copy/paste one photo onto another) or a single layer that has been duplicated (right-click layer and choose "duplicate layer").

Blending options is a way of combining (blending) the top layer down onto the bottom layer using different techniques with varying results.

Filters can also be added to the layer before they are blended in order to give depth and visual interest!

  1. Create an interesting photo "collage" using 2 or more layers blended together

HOMEWORK/ASSIGNMENT DETAILS

Lighting Examples - due Monday, 10/3

--> Light Examples Grading Rubric

This assignment will allow you to get comfortable with using your digital camera in different lighting conditions.

You are expected to experiment with different lighting conditions -- indoor/outdoor, day/night in order to perfect your technique of capturing three types of lighting scenarios: direct, diffuse and silhouette.

For your final submission, you are expected to upload to Flickr:

  1. one example of Direct light
  2. one example of Diffused light
  3. one example of Silhouette light

Lighting A Still Life - due Wednesday, 10/12

--> Lighting a Still Life Grading Rubric

Goal:

So far, you have been tasked with photographing single objects or scenes to show your understanding of the three basic lighting scenarios: direct, diffuse and silhouette.

Now you are asked to create an interesting, detailed study of multiple subjects called a "still life" out of household or found objects. These subjects should hold enough significant meaning individually so that, when they are combined into a whole "scene", the entire photograph is meaningful.

Details:

You will photograph your still life using direct light.

Your still life must contain:

  • A theme or idea that binds your photos together
  • 5 objects total
    • At least one transparent object
    • At least one reflective object
    • At least one textured object
    • You may have additional objects that are not transparent or reflective or textured, as long as they fit into your photgraph's overall theme.
  • A lighting scenario arranged in such a way as to show off each of your objects to its best advantage.

This means you need to think carefully about where/how your objects are arranged -- e.g. how can you light the transparent object without casting the wrong kind of shadow onto your textured object?, etc.

Examples:

Submit:

  1. You will submit 1 contact sheet of at least 5 different photos, showing some ways in which you arranged your objects and lights.
  2. You will submit 1 final photo, resized for Flickr and uloaded to the group.

Motion (Due Monday, Nov 7):

Goal:

Taking into consideration the issues we discussed in class about taking motion photographs with a point and shoot camera, your goal with this assignment is to create the feeling of movement in a still photograph.

Details:

To create the idea of motion in a still photograph or series of photographs you may:

1. Take a still shot of a subject in motion, ensuring that you have "frozen in time" an object, force or person in the midst of an interesting action. The subject of your photograph should be clear to the eye and there should be little to no blur around the subject. The subject or action itself must be what indicates that the subject is in motion. You must work with lighting, framing and composition to ensure that your photograph is pleasing to the audience.

You will upload your best photo to Flickr and move it to the group.

Example:

Still Motion
Water is "frozen" in time, but photo still gives the idea
of movement bsed on the composition and subject matter.

2. Take a "moving shot" of a subject; in this case, there will be movement (blur) in or around the subject of your photograph, to show that the subject is in motion. There should not be so much blur that the subject itself is abstracted. You must work with lighting, framing and composition to ensure that your photograph is pleasing to the audience.

You will upload your best photo to Flickr and move it to the group.

Example:

Moving Motion
Water appears to be in motion even though the
image itself is a still image.

3. Take a series of (at minimum) 5 still shots in some kind of sequence, giving the idea of movement through forward action. This might be accomplished through a series of shots of a subject performing a task. You want to ensure that each photo is significant to the whole of the series -- without one of the 5+ shots, the series would be more or less out of line. You must work with lighting, framing and composition to ensure that your photograph is pleasing to the audience.

You will create a new Flickr set called "Motion" and upload your five images to that set. Do not move to the group!

Example:

Emily D's Motion set on Flickr - yes, this student chose to include many more photos than the assignment called for but even if she had narrowed down the photos to 5-7, she still would have gotten across the idea of a sequence!

While you may use Photoshop to enhance your photos, you should not use blur filters to create a blur where there currently is none.
