2) Open several images from your existing collection you wish to copy squares from. This is for practice only.

3) Ensure they are 300 DPI. (Fake resolution if you have to -- refer to the print handouts or video tutorials on mskalnay.com > Student Resources for help).

4) Select your CROP tool from the Photoshop toolbar and set the width and height to 2 inches and the resolution to 300 dpi.

Crop screen cap

5) Select various areas of your image to crop down to 2x2 inch squares.

6) Select All (CTRL + A) and then Edit > Copy.

7) Go to the grid photo and Edit > Paste.

8) RENAME THE LAYER IMMEDIATELY!

9) Use the Black Move Arrow from your Photoshop toolbar to move the square into position on the grid. Use the Snap command (View > Snap) to get the photos to align perfectly to the grid lines!

10) Repeat for the whole grid.

++++++++++++++++++++

Practice Macro/Minutiae grid gallery walk

  • What are some elements that seem to make the grids work well?
  • What are some techniques or processes you might need to avoid?
  • What are some ways to help the squares in your grid connect strongly?
  • Is the connecting theme or motif easily recognizable?
  • Are the individual photos pleasing to the eye?
  • s the whole composition pleasing to the eye?
  • Could the squares have been arranged in a different fashion to create a better overall composition?
  • Did the subject matter lend itself well to the purpose of the project?

HOMEWORK/ASSIGNMENT DETAILS

Motion (Due Monday, Nov 7):

Goal:

Taking into consideration the issues we discussed in class about taking motion photographs with a point and shoot camera, your goal with this assignment is to create the feeling of movement in a still photograph.

Details:

To create the idea of motion in a still photograph or series of photographs you may:

1. Take a still shot of a subject in motion, ensuring that you have "frozen in time" an object, force or person in the midst of an interesting action. The subject of your photograph should be clear to the eye and there should be little to no blur around the subject. The subject or action itself must be what indicates that the subject is in motion. You must work with lighting, framing and composition to ensure that your photograph is pleasing to the audience.

You will upload your best photo to Flickr and move it to the group.

Example:

Still Motion
Water is "frozen" in time, but photo still gives the idea
of movement bsed on the composition and subject matter.

2. Take a "moving shot" of a subject; in this case, there will be movement (blur) in or around the subject of your photograph, to show that the subject is in motion. There should not be so much blur that the subject itself is abstracted. You must work with lighting, framing and composition to ensure that your photograph is pleasing to the audience.

You will upload your best photo to Flickr and move it to the group.

Example:

Moving Motion
Water appears to be in motion even though the
image itself is a still image.

3. Take a series of (at minimum) 5 still shots in some kind of sequence, giving the idea of movement through forward action. This might be accomplished through a series of shots of a subject performing a task. You want to ensure that each photo is significant to the whole of the series -- without one of the 5+ shots, the series would be more or less out of line. You must work with lighting, framing and composition to ensure that your photograph is pleasing to the audience.

You will create a new Flickr set called "Motion" and upload your five images to that set. Do not move to the group!

Example:

Emily D's Motion set on Flickr - yes, this student chose to include many more photos than the assignment called for but even if she had narrowed down the photos to 5-7, she still would have gotten across the idea of a sequence!

While you may use Photoshop to enhance your photos, you should not use blur filters to create a blur where there currently is none.

Lines (In-class, November 11):

Goal:

Compose two technically competant, visually interesting photographs using strong lines to enhance your images.

Details:

You will need to present two photographs:

1. one example of real lines

2. one example of imaginary lines

In addition: one of the above photos should show evidence of converging lines. These lines should be leading toward a strong focal point!

Submit:

Two resized Flickr photographs that represent the best elements of the goal: strong lines, interesting composition, technical prowess (lighting, framing, rule of thirds, etc.).
