Critique:
Assignment #2: Lighting (finish).
In addition to some critiquing in the class group setting, each person will leave a comment on her own 3 uploaded photos (Diffuse, Direct, Silhouette) about whether or not her photo worked for that particular lighting setup, and why.
Also, she will choose ONE other photo in the Flickr group and leave a comment as to why that photo works the best for its particular lighting setup.
In-Class:
Upload Assignment #3: Contrast & Shadows photos and work with the appropriate tools to ensure that your shadows are strong and your contrast is sharp: Brightness/Contrast, Curves, Levels, Burn & Dodge.
STUDENTS WHO ARE HAVING TROUBLE WITH THEIR SJA LOGINS SHOULD BE USING THE 337 / THIS COMPUTER LOGIN, AND SHOULD BE SAVING EVERYTHING TO / FROM THEIR JUMPS DRIVES UNTIL THE PROBLEM IS FIXED!
You can make the same folder structure on your jump drives as you can on your drives on the network, so there should be no reason for you not to have your photos each day after uploading! (e.g. StudentNameFolder / Assignment #) |

5) Your file should be titled (in Flickr): Contrast & Shadows
6) Your file should have 5 tags, minimum (not including the tags "contrast" and "shadows")
7) I will screen-check your contact sheets of 10-15 images (72 DPI - name it anything you want!)
8) I will collect your typed or hand-written journal entries

- Are you drawn to this photograph? Why or why not?
- Was the photograph framed well?
- Was the composition interesting?
- Could there have been more / less done with any of the Contrast/Shadow tools – which one(s)?
- What is the focal point of the photograph?
- Is your eye drawn to the edges of the photograph?
After group discussion, each group member will choose ONE photograph to write and post their answers to the above questions as a comment on Flickr.

In the formal writing section of your journal, answer the following questions about the article. USE YOUR OWN WORDS when possible:
1) What are some elements that make up a meaningful composition?
2) What meaning does the triangle symbol often connote?
3) What is your symbolic interpretation of this image?
4) What does a circle typically represent in imagery? How might you use that symbol in a photograph to convey that meaning?
5) What associations do verticals have in photographs? What associations do horizontals have?
6) What sort of shape(s) best connote(s) mystery?
7) What three shapes provide the graphic foundation for most action photos?
8) What abstract or metaphoric objects or elements could you include in a photo if you wished to represent an idea of "motherhood" and why?
9) What sort of meaning would your photo impart if it was using ellipses or thought bubble shapes?
10) What is the author trying to warn us against when she suggests "hiding our artistry"?
THIRD
Research the Rule of Thirds of photography (links below). Write up 1-2 clear paragraphs in your own words about:
